Joshua “Sekvoya” Augustine began producing and composing at a young age. Learning from Latin music figureheads in his area, he acquired many skills that shaped the musician he is today. Working under many performing artists, he began his own performing career at the age of 10, becoming a cover guitarist for the local band “13 Orange.” He continued his practice through high school and college, competing and performing across his hometown of San Antonio. Now working on his personal brand, Secoya has a planned release before the end of 2025. Taking inspiration from early 2000s metal bands and underground R&B, the music shows the understanding and practice of classical and jazz instrumentation on both guitar and piano.
Biography
Joshua Augustine is a musician based in San Antonio, Texas. Debuting as a cover guitarist for the band “13 Orange”, he began his career as a performer at the age of 10. After performing with the group for over four years at bars and restaurants around San Antonio, he began working more closely with his teacher and guitarist Leroy Esparza, a Latin Grammy Award winner. Leroy acted as a mentor to Joshua, helping him find an apprenticeship with producer Anthony Perez, work with studio owner Chris Lieck, compete in Jazz competitions, and find a place among the Austin Classical Guitar youth voices. With these experiences, Joshua began writing and producing his own music, finding a sound that falls somewhere between early 2000s metal bands like All That Remains and the harmonies of modern R&B.
After graduating from high school, Joshua began his studies at the University of the Incarnate Word. At this institution, he began learning the piano, performing many local classical concerts with composers on his university's faculty and with visiting artists nationwide, including Nathan Felix’s opera “Glory Gone” and many of local artist Bill Baird’s art installations.
